Volkswagen has launched a comprehensive review of its quality control procedures following embarrassingly low scores on a series of consumer surveys.

With increasing numbers of low-cost Asian competitors targeting VW's core markets, the company is more dependent on its reputation for solidity than ever before.

New boss of VW Martin Winterkorn has personally taken an interest in the problem as he is concerned at its potential to undermine competitiveness.

He has reshuffled his staff, moving head of quality control at VW's upmarket Audi brand in to take control of the issue.

The Mk VI Golf is the first to receive attention, with the door seals on all models so far produced being replaced, and will be followed by the Polo.
