With the rising costs involved in keeping household animals, a spokesperson for Petmeds.co.uk has advised owners to take out a comprehensive pet insurance policy.

The company also reports that 2008 could be an expensive year for pet-owners, with costs of health and medical products for animals rising an average of seven per cent in the last 12 months.

Mr Ricky Thomas, managing director of Petmeds.co.uk, said: "We would encourage anyone to get insurance - and from day one."

However, he added that it was "very important" to choose the correct policy.

Pet owners should search for deals which have a high cap limit, he said, ensuring that pets will be covered for more expensive medical procedures.

He also stated that the Christmas period was a particularly busy time for animal shelters, with most saying they were completely full.

Many people fail to research the needs of their pets and give them away when they realise they are unable to care for them properly, he added.

Current and future pet-owners may well find a suitable deal with InsureandGo.
