Austrians are enjoying ice skating on a giant rink set up in front of the government's famous gothic Rauthaus building in Vienna.

But tourists visiting the historic city will be greeted by not just any old rink. When the cover of night sets in, the whole square is lit up with atmospheric coloured beams of light as waltzes and various dances are played to encourage some imaginative rhythmic skating.

This year there is a new 410 metre ice dream path that connects the rink to its sister skating arena, the Ring meaning that hundreds of people can don their skates at any one time.

For the children, there is a designated 'fun zone', which means they can move around the ice in safety and for those with a competitive edge, there is a curling competition held every evening.

Vienna is well known for its historic architecture, classical concert halls and stunning palaces. To enjoy a view over the entire city, visitors should head up the Danube Tower in Donauturm, which is 352 metres high and is affectionately dubbed, 'the concrete needle'.
