Tourists now view Vietnam as a safe holiday destination, one special interest travel firm has claimed.

According to Voyage Jules Verne, an increased number of flights, improved hotels and a stronger tourism infrastructure has meant that the country is beginning to attract a larger number of overseas visitors.

David Pattison, head of product and marketing at Voyages Jules Verne, added: "Current interest is self-perpetuating in that returning visitors are quick to recommend Vietnam to their friends as a top destination."

He said that infrastructural development within the south-east Asian country is ongoing, with more money being poured into the industry as the number of tourists continues to rise.

According to statistics from the World Travel and Tourism Council, Vietnam is now the fourth fastest growing holiday destination in the world, with 4.2 million visitors recorded last year.

This figure is 16 per cent higher than total visitor numbers for 2006.

InsureandGo offers backpacker insurance for those planning a tour of south-east Asia.
