The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced proposals to reduce the number of harmful chemicals in the water and introduce water quality regulations.

Travel insurance customers flying to the Sunshine State may find the news comforting - as Florida is surrounded by water and famous for its many beaches.

The standards would set a series of limitations on the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen in the state's lakes, rivers, streams, springs and canals.

Knowing that the water is clean and safe may comfort UK travellers heading to Florida this year and the proposals also include a new regulatory process for setting standards that aims to encourage water quality improvements in already impaired waters.

The proposed new regulatory provision, called "restoration standards", would be specific to the nutrients found in Florida's water.

While in Florida, visitors can find a selection of water parks, including the famous Busch Gardens in Tampa.
