To lower the risk of online fraud, web users need to be informed of the risks associated with sharing information over the internet, it has been claimed.
Following the release of its new secure online payment system, an eWise spokesperson has suggested that education is the best protection from online data theft.
Managing director Mark Matthews has said that the biggest point of risk lies with the consumer, with a lack of diligence in sharing information posing the greatest problem for online security.
According to the UK payments association Apacs, over 15 million people in the UK now use the web to access their bank accounts, with many more regularly shopping online.
Despite widespread media coverage of online security threats, 30 per cent of UK adults have not changed their browsing habits to reduce the risk of online fraud.
Mr Matthews commented that when it came to making secure payments, the more choice a consumer is given when making a financial transaction online, the less likely they are to be scared off by concerns about data safety.
It is also advisable to protect home PCs and laptops from theft, damage or loss.
