British consumers are ditching flights for driving holidays, according to a new report.

With the recent emphasis placed upon carbon footprints and the damage that flying does to the environment, one in five respondents to a YouGov survey said taking the car on holiday was their way of doing their bit.

Around 20 per cent of Britons plan to take a domestic holiday this summer, while 11 per cent are driving to their European destination.

Just under half were still intending to take short-haul flights to the continent.

The survey also showed three per cent were so convicted of their need to reduce their carbon footprint that they had cancelled their holiday altogether.

Lloyd East, director of AA Personal Loans, which commissioned the study, said: "AA Deals on Wheels reports have shown a consistent increase in the demand for more environmentally-friendly vehicles over the last year.

"This research further exemplifies the changes people are making to their car purchase and travel plans in order to decrease their carbon footprint."
