Winter an 'ideal time to make home security improvements'

The colder months of the year are an opportune time to make enhancements to home security, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for the firm, explains that the combination of darker nights that can provide cover and the increased chances of costly gifts being located in houses can be tempting for unwanted intruders.

And as burglars are most likely to target properties that are easy to get into, the home insurance provider recommends that policyholders take a number of measures to make their property less appealing to robbers.

Security lights and burglar alarms can act as effective deterrents, while not leaving doors and windows unlocked when a room is unoccupied can also be valuable means of prevention, Mr Rochester notes.

Recent research by Liverpool Victoria suggests that the average home has £25,000 worth of content.
