Women are increasingly choosing to buy convertibles, a new survey by insurer Diamond of its women's car insurance customers has revealed.

According to its figures, female customers were now buying three times more convertibles than ten years ago.

The Peugeot 206cc came out top as the favourite amongst Diamond customers, knocking longtime favourite the Mazda MX-5 off the top spot.

"The 206cc was the car that started the craze for affordable folding hard top roofs and its popularity has no doubt had an effect on the increase we've seen," said Sian Lewis, managing director of Diamond.

But in the south east it is the soft roof tops that are the most popular, said the company.

Practicality and their lesser impact on the environment were believed to be the driving forces behind the convertible craze.

The success of the Peugeot 206cc model has pushed other companies to develop their own affordable lines, further driving demand.
