Female motorists keep an average of £129 worth of personal possessions inside their vehicles on a daily basis, it has been suggested.

Women-only car insurance provider Sheila's Wheels claims that many women tend to treat their cars as an extension of their home, with many found to be regularly leaving books, shoes and clothes in their autmobiles.

The company also reports that the growing "after-work" culture is resulting in a quarter of interviewees stating that they regularly keep a change of clothes in their cars.

Jacky Brown, as spokesperson for the firm, advised: "Any personal belongings, whatever their value, that are left unattended in a car can be easy pickings for opportunistic thieves."

She added that women should avoid treating their car as an extension of their home wherever possible to reduce the risk of being forced to make a car insurance claim as a result of a smashed window or a broken lock as thieves look to steal items left on display.

The AA advises that immobilisers, central locking and alarm systems will also reduce the risk of vehicle theft or break-ins.
