Work has begun on improving the safety of a Nottingham road that has recently become an accident hotspot, the BBC has reported.

Nottingham city council will be spending £44,000 of government money on a stretch of road running from Bestwood Park Drive to Queen's Bower Road.

This road has seen close to 50 accidents in a five-year period to January 2006.

A new roundabout and a 20mph school safety zone outside a local school are among the improvements that the local council hopes will help lessen the high rate of accidents.

Improving the bus stops along the road, as well as vehicle-activated technology that will tell drivers when to slow down will be other additional safety measures.

Work on these additions is expected to be completed on October of this year.

The council has also sought the participation and feedback of local citizens on the new road improvements, wanting to collect information of the sort of traffic problems they had been witness to in the area.

'We really wanted to engage local residents at an early stage of the scheme so that we could feed their knowledge and experience into the design,' said Paul Williams, from Nottingham City Council's accident investigation team to the BBC.
