Demand for holidays in Yorkshire could be set to increase as the year progresses, it has been claimed.

Gary Verity, chief executive officer at Welcome to Yorkshire, said the region proved popular in 2009 and there are signs that this trend could be set to grow over the coming year.

He commented: "Visitor attractions have seen their numbers increase dramatically over the last 12 months. The latest stats from Visit England for last summer's visitors show that trips to Yorkshire grew by 35 per cent."

Mr Verity added that the popularity of the region could help to create more jobs in the area and this would be good for the UK economy.

According to TripAdvisor's eighth annual Travellers' Choice Hotel awards, the best hotel in the UK is Rudding Park in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

Other members of the top ten included the Boskerris Hotel in St Ives, the Charterhouse Hotel, Torquay and the Dunkery Beacon Hotel in Exmoor.
