There are a number of things young motorists can do to make sure they keep their car insurance costs to a minimum, an expert has advised.

While young car drivers are often the drivers that pay most, specially at the start, being savvy can allow them to reduce this amount, said a Direct Line spokesperson.

Statistics such as 'one in three male drivers writing off a car in their first year of driving' are instrumental in setting high prices paid by young people.

Among the advice given was getting a car with a small engine, keeping mileage levels down and taking a Pass Plus course, which costs £100 but could save up to 35 per cent on insurance costs.

'It's worthwhile doing if you are a young driver. From a financial point of view it makes sense, because the average premium for a young male driver is going to be around the £2,000 mark, so if you divide that by three, you are saving around £600,' she said.
