Car costs amount to ?51bn a year

The day-to-day costs of running a car add up to a collective £51 billion a year, according to new research.

A study by Zurich found that motorists spend an average of £1,776.62 on costs such as car tax, parking, fuel and maintenance.

The majority (91 per cent) of respondents think that the day-to-day costs of running a car have gone up in the past five years.

A third of them thought that costs had increased by around £400 a year, the survey found.

But the spiralling costs are causing many to cut corners when it comes to the finances involved in running a car.
