Foreign Office advises on Nigeria travel

The Foreign Office has increased its warnings on travelling to Nigeria, advising against all travel to the Niger Delta.

The Niger Delta area includes Port Harcourt, Bayelsa and the Delta and Rivers states and according to the Foreign Office there is a "very high risk of kidnapping, armed robbery and armed attacks in these areas".

Since the beginning of last year, 130 foreign nationals and 30 British nationals have been kidnapped in the area and one Briton been killed, the Foreign Office reported in its Monday update.

It also advised against "any but essential travel" to the state of Akwa Ibom because of a similar high risk of kidnapping and armed robbery.
