Many people will hold off buying their flights to see whether they can take advantage of a cheap deal, the Air Transport Users Council (ATUC) has noted.
According to the consumer body, customers understand that airlines need to fill empty seats and will often make discounted tickets available as the departure date draws near in an effort to avoid flying light.
James Fremantle, industry affairs manager for the ATUC, explained that with airfares rising and household finances being stretched, more people may choose to hold back for a flight deal in an effort to save costs.
"I think in general air fares will go up in the long term and now and again to fill up these empty seats you find you have these good deals for consumers," he explained.
