Britons planning a gap year might want to take out backpacker insurance and head off to New Zealand or Australia.
Marcus Watts, founder of Gapforce, said there is a perception that travelling to Australia and New Zealand is relatively safe, as they are both English-speaking countries and are very similar to the UK.
He commented: "Australia and New Zealand have always been key destinations - there hasn't been a massive increase in them but we already have significant numbers going there."
Mr Watts added, however, that people need to be aware when travelling of the risks they are opening themselves up to.
