The Pont du Gard - a 2,000-year-old aqueduct carrying water to the city of Nimes - stands in an area of protected natural beauty.
Part of a World Heritage site, the aqueduct itself stands as testament to the efforts made over five years by around 1,000 people, two millennia ago, the landmark's own website asserts.
But it is now a part of modern life, providing the backdrop to activities throughout the warmer months for travellers heading to southern France.
For instance, at Easter the nearby Memoires de Garrigue host a celebration of the religious event with outdoor activities and picnicking.
This picnicking continues throughout the summer on the seven-hectare Mediterranean garden complex.
