Do I need a visa for Iceland from the UK?

No. If you’re a British citizen travelling to Iceland with a valid passport, then you won’t need to apply for a visa. If you’re intending to stay longer than three months then you will need to contact the Icelandic Embassy.

Icelandic healthcare

British citizens should carry their free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which can be used in Iceland. This card will cover any necessary treatments you may receive at public healthcare centres or hospitals on your trip. However, it’s important to remember to still have travel insurance in place to be able to cover the costs of any unexpected medical treatment the EHIC might not cover, including repatriation costs back to the UK.

It’s also important to note that Iceland is both volcanically and seismically active, which means that earthquakes and volcanic eruptions can occur during your visit. If you have a pre-existing medical condition that could be affected by this, it's important that you have adequate medical travel insurance in place. Find out more information about volcanic health hazards here.

Does Iceland sell alcohol?

Iceland has strict rules about the sale of alcohol with supermarkets not permitted to sell it. The only places that are allowed to sell alcohol are restaurants, bars and special government owned alcohol shops called Vínbúðin (pronounced Vin-pooth-in). Also, if you’re under 20, you won’t be able to buy any alcohol.

What if I need emergency assistance in Iceland?

If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of needing medical treatment or assistance while in Iceland, you or someone on your behalf can contact our 24-hour medical assistance team.

All our travel insurance policyholders can get access to our 24-hour emergency medical assistance team on +44 (0)207 748 0060.
