Powerful earthquake hits Eastern Russia

In the early hours of Tuesday, 29th July, a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck just off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula – one of the most powerful quakes ever recorded globally. The tremor unleashed tsunami waves up to five metres high, prompting widespread alerts across the Pacific region.

Authorities in Russia, Japan, Hawaii, Guam, Alaska and California quickly issued tsunami warnings, urging people in coastal areas to evacuate. Japan has relocated over 900,000 people to safety. In Hawaii, traffic has ground to a halt as residents made their way to higher ground.

Aftershocks remain a possibility, and warnings are still active in some areas. Conditions are evolving across the Pacific.
