Next time you go to the supermarket, instead of just buying some instant noodles and a Twix, why not take a moment to look at the fresh fruit? It’s all a bit strange, isn’t it? Bananas are a funny shape, kiwis have a furry skin and strawberries have their pips on the outside! Weird. However, believe it or not, these are actually pretty normal compared to some of the bizarre fruits grown around the world.
Buddha’s hand | India/China
Buddha’s hand is a citrus fruit originating in India or China. Judging by its appearance, it’s 50% lemon and 50% squid (figures are approximate).
It’s a wonder that anyone bothers carving a pumpkin at Halloween, when there are fruits as scary as this growing naturally. It may be the most frightening fruit I’ve ever seen.
Imagine if you bought one and took it home – you wouldn’t be able to sleep knowing it was in the house. You’d have to keep getting up to check it hadn’t crawled out of the fruit bowl.
The fruit itself is almost all peel, but has a strong smell and so is often used as a natural air freshener.
The zest can also be used in cooking and, presumably, you could slice off one of the fingers and put it in a gin and tonic. Remember to take out travel insurance before you head off to shake hands with Buddha.
