Planning a holiday to the sun-drenched Caribbean? Relax and enjoy your trip of a lifetime with our award-winning cover1. Trek to a waterfall. Snorkel in turquoise seas. Our Caribbean travel insurance covers 100 different activities as standard. And there’s no upper age limit. That means everyone can enjoy their dream holiday with InsureandGo.
What is Caribbean travel insurance, and do you need it?
The Caribbean guarantees warmth and scenic splendour. It’s no wonder so many Brits flock there each year. Jamaica alone sees 231,000 UK tourists enjoying its laid-back vibe each year.
Our Caribbean travel insurance covers holidays to the paradise isles. You need it because health care isn’t free for UK tourists to the Caribbean. And treatment can be expensive.
Travel insurance with medical cover is a legal entry requirement for Cuba. It isn’t mandatory for other Caribbean destinations. But the FCDO warns that many islands can’t handle serious medical emergencies. They advise all UK travellers to get Caribbean travel insurance.
The best travel insurance to the Caribbean covers you for a range of incidents. Here’s what makes it a must:
Covers emergency medical costs. The Caribbean is mostly safe, but some areas have high crime rates. Particularly inner city areas. If you’re injured due to crime, travel insurance covers emergency treatment. Private healthcare is expensive. Insurance claims in Barbados are 2.2 times higher than the average cost of a claim across all countries worldwide.
Covers trip disruption. The Atlantic hurricane season affects most Caribbean islands. It runs from June to November each year. Insurance with natural disaster cover can help if bad weather derails your plans.
Covers repatriation. The Caribbean is a scuba diving hotspot. However, it’s also the most common place for an air ambulance call-outs. And not all islands have top medical care. Repatriation back to the UK can cost £50,000. Our insurance covers this, including dives up to 30m. Add extreme sports cover for deeper dives.
Covers cancellation: 48% of the people we surveyed listed cancellation cover as the most important travel insurance feature to them2. Our insurance protects you if you can’t travel for reasons beyond your control.
Help when you need it: InsureandGo policyholders have access to our 24-hour medical team. Call us to get the emergency treatment you need.
Make sure the policy you’ve chosen covers you for all planned activities you have planned. Our policy wording provides full terms and conditions of what is and isn’t included.
Check the latest advice for travel to the Caribbean before you go. Your travel insurance could be invalid if you travel against their advice.
What does InsureandGo’s Caribbean travel insurance cover?
We will consider all pre-existing medical conditions. Find out more about medical travel insurance.
The excess and amount of cover available varies depending on the level of travel insurance you buy. Check the policy wording to see the full terms and conditions.
What’s not covered?
Each provider will have different things it can or cannot include in a policy. However, there are some situations in which travel insurance will not cover. For example:
You cannot cover events or reasons that took place before you booked the trip or purchased insurance. Insurance exists to cover unexpected events outside of the insured’s control
Claims which are less than the excess for that section of cover. For example, you cannot claim a £40 lost item if your baggage excess is £60
All of our travel insurance policies include cover for cancellation of your trip. There may, however, be some exclusions. For example, you won’t be covered to cancel if you simply decide not to go
Which destinations are covered by InsureandGo’s Caribbean travel insurance?
The deserted beaches of Turks and Caicos. The culture of Cuba. The Caribbean has an island for every type of traveller.
We can provide cover for all Caribbean countries. That’s unless the FCDO has advised against all or all-but-essential travel. For example, the FCDO advises against all travel to Haiti due to the volatile security situation. Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against their advice.
One size doesn’t have to fit all when you’re travelling to the Caribbean. Holiday your way with our optional extras. Here’s what we’d suggest.
Teeing off in the sun? The Caribbean has more than 70 courses to try. Adding golf insurance covers your clubs and green fees.
Taking the kids? With water sports and endless activities to try, they’ll be in paradise. Our family travel insurance covers you all under one policy.
Going island hopping? Single trip insurance will cover you for a one-off trip of up to 365 days. Just let us know which Caribbean countries you’ll be travelling to. We’ll quote you a price for the whole trip.
Setting sail? Our Caribbean cruise holiday insurance covers cabin confinement, cruise interruption, itinerary changes and more. And there’s no upper age limit!
Make sure you read our policy wording for more information on what is and isn’t included.

Travel insurance for the Caribbean with pre-existing medical conditions
Packing enough medication. Coping with hot climates and jet lag. Travelling with a pre-existing condition can give you a few more things to think about before you set off. But your health won’t be a barrier when it comes to getting your Caribbean travel insurance.
We’ll consider all medical conditions, including COPD, disability, heart conditions and asthma. Just declare your conditions when getting your quote. Then you’ll be covered for related medical emergencies. That way, unforeseen costs won’t ruin your Caribbean adventure.
Medical travel insurance is something we all hope we won’t need to use. But it’s always worth having in an emergency. The UK Government estimates 10 Brits are hospitalised abroad every day.
Are you travelling to the Caribbean with a pre-existing medical condition? It’s worth remembering that medical resources can vary between islands. In an emergency, you may need air ambulance transport to another island, or even back home. Without travel insurance to cover your condition, you’d be left out of pocket. Even flights to the neighbouring US can cost £11,000.
You must declare all your pre-existing medical conditions when buying your Asia travel insurance. Otherwise, you won’t be covered if you have an emergency related to your condition while away.
If you need treatment when you’re in the Caribbean, contact us as soon as you can.

Our experts say…
“Shimmering water. Blissful beaches. The Caribbean is a dream destination for thousands of UK holidaymakers. There are 26 countries to explore, each with its own culture. It’s the perfect place for an extended trip. But even paradise can have its mishaps. There’s nothing like an injury or illness to put a dampener on your trip. The right policy means you’re fully protected. So you can feel just as laid-back as the islands themselves.”
“Rang InsureandGo about 2 future holidays and a minor blip in husbands health since our last policy. Peter was fantastic and even helped get my cover to include worldwide coverage for another holiday we have booked in the Caribbean. Great service Peter!!”
Higher likelihood of repatriation for medical emergencies. Caribbean islands are relatively remote. Many lack the resources to deal with serious health conditions. As such, the likelihood of injuries and illnesses requiring medical evacuation increases.
High repatriation costs: Need to fly to receive emergency treatment?Private medical flights from the Caribbean to the US can cost £11,000. Travel insurance for the Caribbean can help you get home.
High medical costs: Public healthcare in the Caribbean isn’t free for UK tourists. Public healthcare in the Caribbean is not free for UK tourists. Private treatment can be expensive. The FCDO warns travellers to Jamaica that doctors and hospitals may expect immediate cash payment for health services. Travel insurance to the Caribbean can cover medical expenses if you fall ill or get injured during your trip.
Higher crime rates: Thousands of Brits travel to the Caribbean every year. Most visits are trouble-free, but there is a high crime rate in the Caribbean. While the FCDO doesn’t advise against travelling to Jamaica, it does warn of high crime in specified areas. It also advises caution when travelling in the Dominican Republic.
Violence and unrest: Haiti and multiple regions of Mexico have “all but essential travel” warnings from the FCDO. Research your destination before you leave. Your insurance may be invalid if you travel against their advice. If the FCDO advice changes after you travel to your destination, your policy should cover you if you need to cut your trip short.
Higher chance of natural disasters: The Caribbean is prone to hurricanes and tropical storms. Travel insurance with natural disaster cover can help recoup prepaid expenses like accommodation.
The cost of cancelling your holiday: Travelling to the Caribbean from the UK can be expensive. Travel insurance can help you recoup prepaid expenses. This includes flights, hotels, tours and activities if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel your trip.
Read our policy documents for a closer look at what is and isn’t included.
Does the GHIC cover healthcare for tourists visiting the Caribbean?
GHIC stands for Global Health Insurance Card. You can normally only use this in EU countries, plus Montenegro, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. In these regions, the GHIC lets tourists receive medically necessary healthcare. This is on the same basis as local residents.
As such, you can’t use your GHIC in most Caribbean destinations. However, there are three exceptions – Martinique, Guadeloupe and St Martin. As French Overseas Territories, these Caribbean islands accept the GHIC. However, this covers state healthcare only, and not private treatment. For that, you’ll need to buy worldwide travel insurance.
Our Caribbean travel insurance covers medical expenses, hospital stays, and a whole lot more:
Personal accident and liability
Cancelling and cutting short your holiday
Abandoning your trip
Delayed departure
Accommodation cover
Personal belongings and baggage
Personal money, passport and travel documents
Legal expenses
Is Mexico in the Caribbean for travel insurance?
Geographically, Mexico is part of North America, not the Caribbean. But some popular areas of Mexico, such as Cancun, border the Caribbean Sea. Mexico is sometimes grouped with the Caribbean for worldwide travel insurance.
At InsureandGo, we like to keep things clear and simple. You can get our Mexico travel insurance as a single-trip policy. You can also get it as part of a worldwide annual multi-trip policy. Our worldwide insurance has two groups:
Worldwide (excluding the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean)
Worldwide (including the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean)
Which countries does Caribbean travel insurance cover?
We can provide cover for all Caribbean countries. That’s unless the FCDO has advised against all or all-but-essential travel. Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against their advice.
The FCDO currently advises against all travel to Haiti. This is due to the volatile security situation.
Examples of countries that our Caribbean travel insurance cover include:
Can you add Caribbean travel insurance after booking your trip?
Yes, you can add Caribbean travel insurance after booking your trip. If you buy a single trip policy, cover starts from either the date you book your trip or pay the insurance premium, whichever is later.
If you’ve got an annual multi-trip policy, cover starts at either the time you book your trip or the start date shown on your insurance certificate, whichever is later.
To get Caribbean travel insurance, you’ll need an annual policy with worldwide cover that includes the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
If your existing annual policy excludes the Caribbean, you will need to call our Customer Services team to amend your policy. Please call our UK Contact Centre on 0330 400 1381.
We are open:
Mon-Fri 08:30-20:00
Sat 09:00-17:30
Sun 10:00-17:00
Please note that an amendment to your policy could result in an additional premium. We will be basing your policy on what you have already told us, as well as what you are telling us today. If anything you have told us is wrong or you have missed anything out, it may affect your cover. Amending an existing policy could also result in an administration fee of £15 being applied.
How much is travel insurance for the Caribbean?
The cost of Caribbean travel insurance varies. It depends on your age and how long you’re going for. Pre-existing health conditions and the type of activities you plan on doing can also affect the amount you’ll pay.
The cost also depends on the level of cover you require. Our Black level policies offer the highest level of insurance for travel to the Caribbean. Black level policies include unlimited medical expenses, up to £10,000 of cancellation cover, and no excess to pay. We also offer Gold, Silver and Budget levels of cover.
There are ways to make Caribbean travel insurance more affordable. If you’re travelling with friends, a group travel policy could be cost-effective.
Think carefully about your travel plans. For example, an annual European policy may be more affordable if you’re planning many trips to Europe and one holiday to the Caribbean. You can then arrange a separate single trip policy for your visit to the Caribbean.
Can you get travel insurance if you’re visiting more than one country in the Caribbean?
Yes, you can. We should be able to cover you from the date you leave your home country until the date you return. This means we can cover travelling to multiple destinations as part of your holiday.
To make sure you’re covered, check:
Your policy covers all the regions you plan to visit.
None of the places you’re visiting are against the advice of the FCDO.
That the duration of your holiday is covered – different policies have different maximum trip lengths.
You’ve got all the visa requirements you need for each country you’ll be visiting.
