Get travel insurance for breast cancer with cover for medical emergencies, lost medication and unexpected hospital stays so you can travel stress-free.
An estimated 600,000 people in the UK live with, or are in remission from, breast cancer. This is predicted to rise to 1.2 million in 2030. Many of those will wish to continue living normally, including going on holiday!
Finding the right travel insurance lets you enjoy your trip, knowing you’re protected if something goes wrong. But many providers do not offer travel insurance for those living with cancer. No wonder 60% of people living with cancer say getting travel insurance is their top concern when going away.
At InsureandGo, we’ll consider all medical conditions. Whether you’re recently diagnosed, undergoing treatment, or living with terminal cancer, we’ll do our best to find a policy that’s suited to your needs.
Here’s why finding the best breast cancer travel insurance is a must:
Covers emergency medical expenses: If you’re receiving treatment for breast cancer, you may need to take extra precautions on holiday. Taking tamoxifen can increase the risk of developing blood clots on long-haul flights. Both radiotherapy and chemotherapy can make your skin more sun-sensitive. Breast cancer travel insurance means you’re covered for emergency medical treatment related to your condition.
Covers repatriation: If you need to be flown home due to a medical emergency, repatriation costs can be high, even in Europe. The cost for one UK traveller in Spain was £124,000. Travel insurance with breast cancer cover included can ensure you’re not left paying the bill.
Covers cancellation: In our recent survey, 48% said cancellation cover was their most important travel insurance feature1. If your travel plans change due to health reasons, breast cancer travel insurance will cover any unexpected costs.
Protects your belongings: A lost or stolen bag is a common travel mishap. But it can be a serious problem if it contains essential medication. In the USA, the retail price of tamoxifen is $114. Breast cancer travel insurance makes sure you’re not left counting the cost.
Help when you need it: Travelling with breast cancer can mean some extra planning and possible risks. We also offer a 24/7 emergency medical helpline if you need it.
Lets you do more: Living with breast cancer shouldn’t put a stop to your travel plans. We cover over 100 different sports and activities as standard.
Please note: ‘breast cancer travel insurance’ is a general term for one of our standard travel insurance policies. It is subject to medical screening and may require an additional premium. We don’t offer specialist cover for this specific condition.
Make sure the policy you’ve chosen covers you for all the activities you have planned. Our policy wording provides full terms and conditions of what is and isn’t included.
You’ll also need to tell us all your pre-existing medical conditions. We can’t cover any costs related to medical issues that aren’t declared. If your medical history isn’t accurate, you may have to pay for unexpected medical costs.
What types of breast cancer does InsureandGo’s travel insurance cover?
We understand the needs of travellers with breast cancer and will tailor a policy to your specific medical requirements. We’ll consider all forms of breast cancer, even if you are:
Newly diagnosed: In the UK, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every ten minutes. We can provide travel insurance following a breast cancer diagnosis, from the early stages through to stage 4 and metastatic cancer.
Receiving treatment: It may be possible to travel while receiving treatment for breast cancer. For example, if you’re receiving hormone or targeted therapy, or you’re between chemotherapy sessions. You’ll need to get the go-ahead from your doctor first. We can’t cover you if you’re travelling against medical advice.
Told your cancer is terminal: We may be able to offer you cover if you have terminal cancer, if your GP confirms you’re fit to travel. That’s as long as your prognosis is more than six months from your return date.
In remission: Breast cancer is considered to be in remission when there are no signs or symptoms of cancer after treatment. You’ll need to declare breast cancer as a pre-existing condition even if you’re in remission, if you’ve done any of the following in the last 24 months:
Gone to any medical appointments regarding your breast cancer
Experienced any symptoms
Had any tests or received any results
Had surgery
Had treatment
Taken medication

What’s not covered?
Each provider will have different things it can or cannot include in a policy. However, there are some situations in which travel insurance will not cover. For example:

Breast cancer travel insurance with other pre-existing medical conditions
Having more than one medical condition is extremely common. In one study, 58.4% of women with breast cancer had at least one other pre-existing health condition. 25.8% had more than one. Having breast cancer and hypertension (high blood pressure) was the most common co-morbidity.
We can cover your trip for multiple pre-existing health conditions, as well as your breast cancer. Just tell us all your conditions. We’ll create a quote that works for you.
Examples of medical conditions we can cover include:
To make sure you get the cover you need, we will ask you a few questions about your condition/s during the medical screening. Things we may ask about include:
The type of breast cancer you have
Whether the cancer has spread
The grade of the cancer
What treatment you’ve had and are currently undergoing
Whether you have any other pre-existing conditions
You must declare all your pre-existing medical conditions when buying your breast cancer travel insurance. Otherwise, you won’t be covered if you have an emergency related to your conditions while away.
Getting a quote for travel insurance with breast cancer cover is quick and easy.
1. Let us know about your trip
Tell us where you’re going, who you want to cover and when you want the policy to start. We’ll ask you about your breast cancer and any other pre-existing medical conditions.
You can give us this information online or by phone.
Once we have all the details we need, we will send you your quote. At this stage, you can go ahead and buy your policy, or save the quote for the future.
Our experts say…
“Living with breast cancer shouldn’t stop you from going on holiday. With the right travel insurance, you can plan your dream trip without worrying about unexpected costs. But the best breast cancer travel insurance does more than help you with medical emergencies. It can also cover your itinerary, from hiking to golf. We’ll work with you to make sure you get a quote that covers all your plans.”
“Easy to use site. It was also easy to report my breast cancer which hasn’t spread, and I was given the option to put that. In Jersey we can’t always find travel insurance, so that helps too, as I’m offered loads that I fill in everything and am informed at the end that the Channel Islands don’t qualify.”
Can I still travel abroad if I have breast cancer?
Yes, you can travel abroad with breast cancer if your consultant or specialist nurse says you’re well enough to travel. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip, it’s best to plan ahead:
Take a doctor’s letter: Ask your doctor for a letter explaining the type of cancer you have, your treatment and your medications. Carry the letter in your hand luggage so that you can show it to customs officers if you need to. Read more information about taking medicine abroad.
Don’t run out of meds: If you take medication, make sure you have enough for the entire trip. Consider splitting doses between different bags in case a suitcase gets lost or stolen.
Make sure you’re fit to fly: Blood clots are more common in women with breast cancer. Lymphoedema (swelling following surgery to remove your lymph nodes) can get worse in the pressurised cabin. Make sure your doctor has confirmed you’re fit to fly before you book. You may be advised to wear compression garments.
Research your destination: If you’re planning to travel somewhere that requires vaccinations, discuss your plans with your treatment team first. Live vaccinations for things like yellow fever, typhoid and tuberculosis are not recommended for at least six months after chemotherapy due to the infection risk.
Get the right breast cancer holiday insurance: The best policy will cover lost medication and hospital stays.

Why does breast cancer affect the cost of travel insurance?
The cost of travel insurance is based on a wide range of factors. Breast cancer and the questions you answer about it in the medical screening are one factor, along with:
Your age: Travel insurance is generally more expensive as you get older.
Other pre-existing medical conditions: If you’ve got any other health conditions as well as breast cancer, this will impact your premium.
The destination you’re travelling to: Travel insurance policies to destinations like the USA or Caribbean tend to cost more due to the high cost of healthcare. Travel insurance to Europe costs less due to the GHIC health agreement.
How long you’ll be going for: The longer you’re away, the greater the odds of a claim.
Any policy add-ons you require: You may want to include extra cover for valuables, or for activities such as a cruise or golfing holiday.
When getting your quote, you will complete a brief medical screening. If your breast cancer needs medication or carries a higher risk of complications, this will impact the cost.
Does the GHIC cover breast cancer?
The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) does not cover breast cancer treatment. It’s designed to provide access to state healthcare in Europe. But it only covers medically necessary treatment that can’t reasonably wait until you return home. It doesn’t cover pre-planned cancer treatment like chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
But if you’re travelling to Europe, you should still take your GHIC with you. Valid in countries in the European Union, and other countries such as Australia, it’s great for basic cover in medical emergencies.
Just remember that the GHIC isn’t the same as having travel insurance for breast cancer. It won’t cover the costs if you need to be flown back to the UK in a medical emergency, or for private healthcare.
The best travel insurance for breast cancer does more than a GHIC, because it also covers:
Lost or stolen personal items.
Losses from trip cancellation, curtailment and interruption.
Extra travel and accommodation costs due to illness.
Any medical treatment needed outside of the EU.
