Germany offers something for every kind of traveller. Planning a stroll through Berlin’s historical landmarks? Exploring Bavaria’s alpine beauty? Maybe even a Rhine River cruise. Make sure you’re fully covered with Germany travel insurance.
Our policy covers all the essentials. This includes medical emergencies, lost or stolen belongings, trip cancellations, and delays. With InsureandGo, you can focus on experiencing Germany to the fullest.
What is Germany travel insurance, and do you need it?
In 2024, 37.4 million international tourists visited Germany. From Oktoberfest to hiking, Germany offers amazing experiences. But to enjoy all this, having the right travel insurance is essential.
Here’s why Germany travel insurance is a must:
Covers healthcare costs. Germany has world-renowned healthcare facilities. It ranks 4th in the World Index of Healthcare Innovation. However, medical treatment can be expensive for visitors. With travel insurance, you’re covered for any urgent care, from minor illnesses to more serious emergencies. You just need to declare any pre-existing conditions to us in advance.
Covers lost or stolen belongings. Germany is known as a safe country for visitors. But Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen have the highest regional crime rates. Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, in particular, is bad for pickpocketing. Travel insurance can help cover the cost if you lose or misplace a valuable item. Whether it’s your passport or wallet, you can get back to enjoying your trip!
Covers repatriation costs. Serious medical issues could mean you may need to return home in a hurry. The cost of medical transport back to the UK from Germany can be high. Repatriation costs can start from as much as £7,500. With travel insurance, you’re covered for these costs.
Covers your essential medication. It’s frustrating if you lose vital medication on holiday. The good news is that travel insurance covers the cost. If medications are lost or delayed, you will be covered for replacements. Our 24/7 medical helpline is also on hand to direct you to nearby pharmacies or medical help.
Travel delays and cancellations. Cancelling travel plans due to illness is never nice. Especially when you’re not able to claim the money back. With our insurance, we can cover non-refundable costs for flights, accommodations, and experiences.
Adventure and activity cover. Planning to try extreme activities like paragliding in the Allgäu region? Maybe some rock climbing near Dresden? Whatever your activity, our extreme sports cover keeps you protected.
Choose a policy that covers you for everything you’ve got planned. We’d also recommend you read our policy wording. This outlines exactly what’s covered and what isn’t.
Before you book, be sure to check the latest travel advice for Germany. If you travel against their advice, it may invalidate your insurance.
We will consider all pre-existing medical conditions. Find out more about medical travel insurance.
The excess and amount of cover available varies depending on the level of travel insurance you buy. Check the policy wording to see the full terms and conditions.
What’s not covered?
Each provider will have different things it can or cannot include in a policy. However, there are some situations in which travel insurance will not cover. For example:
You cannot cover events or reasons that took place before you booked the trip or purchased insurance. Insurance exists to cover unexpected events outside of the insured’s control
Claims which are less than the excess for that section of cover. For example, you cannot claim a £40 lost item if your baggage excess is £60
All of our travel insurance policies include cover for cancellation of your trip. There may, however, be some exclusions. For example, you won’t be covered to cancel if you decide not to go.

Travel insurance for Germany with pre-existing medical conditions
Germany is known for its fantastic healthcare and medical facilities. However, treatment for tourists can be expensive. With travel insurance, all your medical expenses are taken care of. If you’re travelling with a pre-existing condition, insurance becomes essential.
We consider all medical conditions. This includes:
You must declare any pre-existing conditions during your quote process. If you don’t, you won’t be covered for anything related to your condition. Completing our online medical screen process makes this easy. Or, you can call us, and we’ll help you.
You will also have access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip. Meaning you’re just a call away from assistance, wherever you are.
Booking travel insurance for Germany is easy. Here’s how it works:
1. Tell us a few details about your trip
Let us know where and when you’re going, and who you’re travelling with. Then tell us if you have any pre-existing medical conditions you wish to cover.
We’ll show you your quote. All you have to do is decide whether to buy it now or save it for later.
Our experts say…
“Germany is known for its excellent healthcare services. However, the price for travellers can be high. If you’re injured without cover, medical bills can run into the thousands. Travel insurance negates this worry and risk. With it, you can enjoy your trip knowing you’re covered should anything happen.”
“A big thank you to Keith at Insureandgo for all his help today with getting my upcoming trip to Germany covered! Keith was very friendly, informative and explained things clearly to me. Sometimes, I can find arranging insurance a daunting task but Keith explained it all to me in a way I could feel at ease with!”
Travel insurance isn’t legally required for Germany if you’re a UK resident. However, it’s highly recommended. Even with a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), you won’t be covered for other costs. This includes private medical care, repatriation costs, or trip disruptions. Travel insurance ensures you’re prepared for unexpected costs. This includes a hospital visit in Berlin or replacing lost luggage on a Rhine River cruise.
How much is travel insurance for Germany?
The price of your insurance depends on a few things. Mainly:
Your age. Older travellers may have to pay a bit more for insurance. However, we’ll help you find the best quote for you.
Length of stay. The longer your stay, the more expensive insurance becomes. If you’ve got multiple trips planned, multi-trip cover might be best. Plus, you’re more likely to save money with this policy.
Any pre-existing conditions. Declaring conditions like asthma or diabetes could increase the price. However, it’s worth it to make sure you’re fully covered. Knowing you’re prepared for any medical needs means you can relax and enjoy your trip!
Policy add-ons. You can add options like gadget cover, motorcycling, or cruise insurance. Bringing some pricey tech along? Planning some water sports? Maybe even cruising from Germany? These add-ons can keep you covered.
Yes, but only for medically necessary state-provided healthcare. A GHIC won’t cover private treatment, repatriation, or non-essential care. Travel insurance fills these gaps and ensures you’re covered for unexpected costs. This includes things like hospital stays, medication replacements and emergency treatments.
