The Netherlands offers a unique experience for every traveller. From Amsterdam’s iconic canals to the marvellous windmills of Kinderdijk. Take us with you to make sure you’re protected, whatever happens.
Our policies cover all the essentials. Including medical emergencies, lost or stolen belongings, trip cancellations, and delays.
What is Netherlands travel insurance, and do you need it?
Last year, over 51.2 million tourists visited the Netherlands. In that same year, tourists spent 111.2 billion euros in the Netherlands, a 6% increase from the previous year. And it’s no wonder why. The Netherlands is a wonderful country and offers so much.
To enjoy the Netherlands to the fullest, it’s best to be safe. Accidents and unforeseen circumstances can happen. A bike ride accident along the canals, or a flight cancelled due to illness. In these events, it’s worth being fully protected.
With Netherlands travel insurance, you can enjoy the following benefits:
Covers healthcare costs. Medical services (both regular and emergency) are not provided free of charge in the Netherlands. Medical treatment can become expensive quickly for tourists. Healthcare costs in the Netherlands have also increased over time, from 3.8% of GDP in the 1970s to 14.5% in recent years. With medical travel insurance, you are covered for accidents and illnesses. This is especially important if you have pre-existing conditions.
Covers lost or stolen belongings. While the number of robberies in the Netherlands is declining, it’s important to err on the side of caution. Additionally, it’s not uncommon to misplace a phone, wallet or passport while on holiday. But replacing them can become costly and time-consuming. Should you lose any items in the Netherlands, travel insurance can help cover the cost.
Covers repatriation costs. No one wants to think about emergency transport home. However, in this scenario, an air ambulance home can cost a small fortune. Repatriation prices start from £8,000; however, travel insurance covers this.
24/7 medical help. Dealing with a medical worry while away can ruin your trip. Our 24/7 helpline puts you in touch with a medical professional. This is particularly helpful if there are language barriers. Plus, they can point you in the direction of pharmacies and practitioners. With our insurance, you’ll have 24/7 access to our medical team.
Cancellations and delays. Travel plans can be disrupted due to illness, transportation strikes, or other unforeseen events. Cancellation cover helps recover costs for these events. Including cancelled flights, accommodations, and prepaid activities.
Adventure and activity cover. Planning to cycle through the Netherlands’ tulip fields? Paddleboarding in Amsterdam’s canals? Or windsurfing on the North Sea coast? Whether you’re exploring on two wheels or the water, our adventure cover protects you.
Choose a policy that covers you for everything you’ve got planned. We’d also recommend you read our Policy Wording. This outlines exactly what’s covered and what isn’t.
Before you book, be sure to check the latest travel advice for the Netherlands. If you travel against their advice, it may invalidate your insurance.

We will consider all pre-existing medical conditions. Find out more about medical travel insurance.
The excess and amount of cover available varies depending on the level of travel insurance you buy. Check the policy wording to see the full terms and conditions.
What’s not covered?
Each provider will have different things it can or cannot include in a policy. However, there are some situations travel insurance will not cover. For example:

Claims which are less than the excess for that section of cover. For example, you cannot claim a £40 lost item if your baggage excess is £60
All of our travel insurance policies include cover for cancellation of your trip. There may, however, be some exclusions. For example, you won’t be covered to cancel if you decide not to go.

Travel insurance for the Netherlands with pre-existing medical conditions
Travelling with a pre-existing medical condition doesn’t have to be stressful. And nothing should get in the way of your trip to the Netherlands. And while the Netherlands is ranked fourth in the 2024 World Index of Healthcare Innovation, medical treatment for tourists can be expensive. Travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions can cover this.
Examples of medical conditions we can cover include:
You must declare any pre-existing medical conditions during the quote process. Failing to do so may result in claims being denied for related treatment. Declaring is simple through our online medical screening, or you can call us, and we’ll help you.
You will also have access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip. Meaning you’re just a call away from assistance, wherever you are.
Booking travel insurance for the Netherlands is easy. Here’s how it works:
1. Tell us a few details about your trip
Let us know where and when you’re going, and who you’re travelling with. Then tell us if you have any pre-existing medical conditions you wish to cover.
We’ll show you your quote. All you have to do is decide whether to buy it now or save it for later.
Our experts say…
“The Netherlands is considered one of the safest countries in the world. Despite this, accidents can and do happen. Having travel insurance protects you from this and more. Whether it’s a lost passport, cancelled flights or even an air ambulance back home. Our cover keeps you safe, allowing you to enjoy all the Netherlands’ attractions.”
Travel insurance is not a legal requirement. That said, it is highly recommended when visiting the Netherlands. It is impossible to plan for accidents, delays or emergencies. In the event of anything happening, travel insurance will cover you. Whether it’s a cycling accident, a pre-existing condition flaring up or a cancelled flight. Without insurance, it can be expensive to solve these issues.
Does GHIC cover healthcare when travelling in the Netherlands?
The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) covers necessary state-provided healthcare in the Netherlands. This includes emergency treatments, GP visits, and some prescription costs. However, the GHIC doesn’t cover private healthcare, medical repatriation, or non-medical issues like cancellations or lost belongings. Travel insurance complements the GHIC by covering these gaps.
The price of your insurance depends on a few things. Mainly:
Your age. Older travellers might pay more due to increased health risks. However, we’ll help you find the best quote for you.
Length of stay. Longer trips tend to come with higher premiums. If you’ve got several trips planned, multi-trip cover might be best. And, you’re more likely to save money with this policy.
Any pre-existing conditions. Declaring your medical conditions could increase the price. However, it’s worth it to make sure you’re fully covered. Knowing you’re prepared for any medical needs means you can relax and enjoy your trip!
The level of cover you choose: We offer four levels of cover. With Budget, Silver, Gold and Black, we’re sure to have a policy to suit you. Need help choosing one? Speak to us.
Policy add-ons. Looking for some additional cover? From gadgets to winter sports, our add-ons ensure you’re prepared for whatever you have planned,
Is healthcare free in the Netherlands for foreigners?
No, healthcare in the Netherlands is not free for foreigners. You will be expected to pay for any medical care you receive. Which could end up costing a lot. Travel insurance mitigates this and will cover you for any healthcare.
